In Memory

Ken Jones

Ken Jones

We have learned that Classmate Ken Jones passed away on April 18, 2025 at his home in Canyon Lake, Texas at the age of 74.

Here is the tribute to Ken posted on FaceBook by his daughter, Kensley Jones Greuter:

It is my heartbreaking honor to let you know that my charismatic, loving father, Ken Jones Jr., unexpectedly passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025 in his home, in his bed, asleep with no pain, with his beloved wife, Sally Ehlert Jones, at his side—a noble death we can only hope for.

I can’t tell you what this man meant to me and countless others, how his expansive light shaped the room he entered, and in his warm, strong embrace you felt safe, loved, and protected, even if you just met him. He led with kindness, humor, compassion, and encouragement, casting laughter and awe in his magnificent wake.

I will always think of him as the entertainer, the piano man, the harmonizer of vintage barbershop quartets, the storyteller of jokes from a bygone era. He was a visionary, a dreamer, always wanting the best for others, always searching for his next adventure. He showed us that there are angels in disguise walking among us who accept and love others just as they are and who act with an unassuming strength.

If you asked others, they would describe him as jovial; entertaining; spirited; unjudgmental; caring; fatherly; creative; patient; a good listener; strongest massaging hands; attentive; hilarious; welcoming; the best story-teller ever; handsomely rotund; the best amateur piano-playing singer; beautiful voice; gives the best hugs; never met a stranger; and, a wearer of the infamous “HOOF ARTED” hat at the most inappropriate of times. But to me, he’ll always just be my dad, who I loved deeply.

Born to Jean and Ken Jones Sr. on September 2, 1950, Ken grew up in San Antonio, Texas with his older sister, Gail Garrett Tomko, playing football and working on cars. He met the love of his life, Sally, at 17 and was dedicated to her for over 57 years. He owned his own insurance business and had multiple adventures in real estate, cars, plumbing, etc. You name it, he tried it. His legacy continues in his children, Kensley and Kale, who grew up riding his miniature motorcycles, going fishing and hunting with him, and learning from him the gifts of kindness, humor, and dreaming big.

Ken is survived by his loving wife, Sally; his son, Kale, and daughter-in-law, Oma; his daughter, Kensley, and her partner, Ben; his sister Gail and brother-in-law, Terry; and his five sweet grandchildren, Nina, Kreyton, Kaden, Claire, and Karsyn, among many other beloved family members.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Looking Glass Place in Canyon Lake on Saturday, May 31st from 2-5pm (open house format).

Ken was a great guy and a good friend. We sang together in the choir and in a men's quartet at vocal competitions throughout the city. Always smiling and enjoying life. I guess heaven needs a bass. Rest in peace Ken.

I for one know he taught me how to work on my car so we could both rumble into the San Pedro drive in... We always chose Ken's trunk to get in to avoid the admission. Such a great friend growing up and I am sure the heavenly harmonization of him and Mark are there for all to hear..

Ken was one of the first guys I met when I moved to San Antonio. He was the center on our football team and a great teammate. Ken always reminded me of Baloo the bear from Jungle Book. A big, happy guy, always singing, kind of goofy but very wise. We both lived out San Pedro and I spent many hours in Ken's workshop in his backyard working on cars. He had a 57 Ford that was jacked up in the rear with really loud pipes. The neighbors always knew when Ken was home! Ken had a beautifull voice and was always singing; as Pitchford said, I'm sure Ken and Mark Karpel are harmonizing in heaven. Rest in Peace old friend.
