Since 1969 I've had to mostly work - until May, 2014 when I retired. Most of my career was spent guessing where to drill for oil, then hoping that the amount I found was worth more than the expense to find it. Before retiring, I worked the last 12 years for Denbury Resources, an enhanced oil recovery company where I didn't have to guess as much. We simply went back to very big and very old, oil fields where most of the oil had already been found, produced, and abandoned. I only had to decide which old wells to inject CO2 down and which ones to use as new producers again.

I hope to see more of you guys, or at least hear from you more often now that Ken has set up this website thing. Most of us are still a lot of fun, at least we think so.

Have been attending regularly 1-2 UT football games a year for the past 11 seasons. Looking forward to a Port A fishing trip coming up in Sept 2014 and catching up with Bill Barnhill, John Mullins, and Rick Alexander. But mostly I am enjoying the grandkids now in retirement. They all live very close to us (like really close - Nicole in Rockwall, same as us - Steven in Wylie).

School Story:

Went to class, pretty much behaved myself, learned a lot in Mr. Keils Geometry class, laughed a lot with Whitey Lasswell in Miss Wright's Spanish class, loved a lot in my dreams, swam laps in junior Ray Ince's fading bubbles, went home tired, did my homework, studied, went to the Frontier drive-in and Stinky Falls on the weekends, did not behave myself quite as well, although that was always Barnhill's or Thieleman's fault. Liked P and J (not talkin' about food).

All Brahmas, all your Navy buds, and the entire Longhorn nation (and you almost know them all), wish you a very happy birthday. So do a bunch of football players, golfers and hunters, swimmers, and always dependable 3rd place finish one man diving teams. Your many electrical engineering and computer software field associates, who always put up with your relentless “can do” attitude, all wish you a very HBD, but are so happy themselves now that you are finally fully retired. The fishing communities of Port Aransas and the Republic of Costa Rica both send birthday well wishes and thank you’s for your continuous contributions to their GDP’s, along with the Spoetzl Brewery (Shiner Bock Beer). And finally, all your back, shoulder, knee, hip, and neck orthopedic surgeons send their best to one medical marvel of a man. Happy Birthday Ricky, keep smiling, it’s contagious.

Happy birthday Roy. Sure did enjoy our day in Austin with you, and hearing those old wild and crazy stories (some for the first time). Hope you have a good day and get a few extra hugs from those that matter the most.

I first knew Randy during our later years at Mac.  He shared his family ranch with me and I shared my family's water ski boat with him.  We had lots of fun together - not surprisingly, mostly during hunting season and summers.

I once arrived at his house in Hollywood Park with a flat tire.  After spending about 15 minutes locating the spare, and staring at the jack, his sister Pam, realized that I was going to need some help, so she asked Randy for immediate assistance.  He changed my flat in 5 minutes while casually telling me a funny story about some past decision making of his that resulted in creating some flat tires.  One of the fruits of the Spirit is kindness.

Later on while we were both attending UT, I was driving this little piece of crap 4-cylinder Ford Capris.  I had to often jump start my 2 good cylinders with jumper cables, as my alternator was failing and not properly recharging the battery.  Well, Randy said he could fix the mess.  So I drove over to Randy's somewhere off Airport Blvd in Austin late one night.  For about 3 hours I watched Randy become a genuine auto mechanic as he rebuilt my alternator under the light of a hanging work light, soldering every color wire imaginable to a series of metal plates.  He never once needed my usual "fix-it-up" tool, a heavy hammer.  We (he) finished up around midnight.  Another fruit of the Spirit is patience, and another self-control.

I will never forget Randy's smile.  I could still see it from the end of our 75 foot long ski rope while he was pulling me and Bill Barnhill down the long, "smooth-as-glass" river section of Lake McQueeney while we were double bare-footing as he grinned from ear to ear looking back at us.  He would tell me that story every time I saw him.  His most defining fruit of the Spirit was the gift of joy.  I think something is in my eyes, they are tearing up, so I will close now.  I will miss him dearly.

P.S.  As I was leaving the memorial service, I looked around and wondered if there were any deer still left around here or did they all end up posing in that slideshow.

Sing this:
Happy birthday you old jock,
Happy birthday you old retired engineer,
Happy birthday you singing cowboy,
You're lucky your family puts up with you.

Hey Court, happy birthday. Go out and get that Mini Cooper. Carpe diem.
Or go to Max's Wine Dive and "Suck the Marrow Out of Life"; $5 wines by-the-glass!
Have a good one.

Have a huge happy birthday John. Big party in Nashville tonight. What time is Blake, Taylor, and life of sinning Sturgill coming over?

Getting older and becoming 64 is no longer "many years from now" - it's tomorrow! Join the club and wishing you HBD Court! Didn't want to forget rubbing it in, so I'm a day early. How goes the hair and the grandchildren (or grandkittens) on your knee situation? Hard to believe I haven't seen you since forever. We should try to change that. Bill's just up the road from you in Round Rock. We'll all be down there in Austin for our annual UT football game in the fall. We'll call you.
