Later at Mac, I let my sideburns get a little long. Coach started calling me Hollywood, but I was a little slow on the uptake. Got the paddle shortly thereafter. Was pretty hardheaded too, because it happened one more time before I learned. I should have learned earlier at Garner. One day, at the end of a cold, drizzly winter practice, I was one of the last in the locker room. Keith Rainwater was the only one still in the showers, with rolls of steam coming out. Coach: "Rainwater, get done." Keith: "OK coach" Another minute of steam rolling out. Coach: " Rainwater, get out of there!" Keith: "OK coach" And another minute of steam. Then I see Coach stride by carrying a CO2 fire exstinguisher. Keith: "NO! Coach! NO!" and the sound of the exstinguisher, followed by Keith rapidly exiting the shower stalls with ice crystals on his body hairs. Coach Davis knew how to make a point.

He looked like the Marine that he was: ramrod straight, impeccably dressed in a suit, serious expression, and a flat top cut with military precision. My buddy Court Thielman said " he looked like he could stride down the hall with a plate of spaghetti on his head and not spill a drop". The man had a presence and even as a 7th grader I could tell he was a man of substance. He commanded respect. Paul's story moved me and yet did not surprise me. Coach Davis had a humanity and integrity that was rare. On a humorous note Tony Degges and I had delusions of grandeur and went out for 8tth grade basketball together. At the first practice Coach called Whitey Laswell to the front of the assembled wannabe players. He rubbed Whitey's buzz cut and said that if we wanted to make the team he recommended we get our hair buzzed like Whitey. Degges and I saw our future as Garage Band Rock Stars flushed. This put a dent in our enthusiasm and Coach did us a favor and kicked us off the court for playing grab ass. We left it to the pros...Perkins, Pearce, Shipley.......you know the guys. And I remember once Coach caught Bill Sills smoking out by the track with his hollywood ducktail haircut, pegged pants and stomps. Coach relieved him of his cigarettes and made him run 4 laps around the track in his street clothes and of course Sills nearly coughed up his lungs. That was Coach Davis teaching a lesson in healthy lifestyles. What a man. He can enter his house justified.

First day football practice ate my lunch. I quit and Coach Davis confronted me in the locker room. "Get your butt back out there" I did what was told. It was pretty well set the that most players had established friendships and very athletic. Coach Davis would have me face Jimmy Briscoe one on one on the boards. Then say, "Not good enough, do it again." Don't know how I made it. After football season my dad, officer in the Air Force, stationed in Okinowa, divorced my mom. He sent to Okinowa and things got worse. Came back for my junior year and placed on Jr. Varsity. Coach Davis was my mentor and I had success as a defensive lineman. My senior year Coach McManus told me to leave the locker room, that I wasn't capable. He and I had it out verbally. Then May 69, I was in the hallway cleaning out my school locker. Coach Davis saw me not in class. He was twirling his stringed whistle and said, "What the heck are you doing" I told him I was quitting school. Coach said, "Put your stuff back in there and get to class." I told him that I enlisted and due to go to boot camp. Coach shook his head and placed both hands on my shoulders. He said a quick prayer and said "Be Strong and do what's right" I will never forget him. He was genuine and good. RIP Coach Davis

Gonzalez, Governor John Connally, and President LBJ. Other members of my family could recollect something about it. My younger sister, Lori, went to a HemisFair dance/ballet performance with my mom. Before it had even opened, my parents happened to buy our house in Northwood in 1965 from a HemisFair architectural/design engineer. In my then teenage opinion I remembered HemisFair as becoming only the 4th travel destination in downtown S.A.; the other three of course being The Alamo, Casa del Rio, and Joske's. In other words I was pretty much clueless to "world cultures" (unless living 4 years earlier in Laredo, Tx counted). My teen brain had just not grown up yet. Most of my buddies, and perhaps a gal or two could attest to that. Did we get a day off for Fair Day?

I actually have a photo of you, Ken, myself and Gary Caswell at Hemisfair! I will have to look for it!

2017-12-29T14:27:31-04:00Blind Faith Concert @ The HemiHemisFair '68 was 50 years ago
HemisFair '68 was 50 years ago--April 6, 1968 through October 6, 1968. It opened in the Spring of our junior year at Mac. I happened to be there on Opening Day as part of a state-wide student council convention. That was the most spectacular event that I had seen up to that point and my first exposure to multiple "world cultures" in one setting. Another of my memories about HemisFair was that San Antonio Savings (where I deposited my minimum wage paychecks) would give out 2 FREE HemisFair tickets for every $50 deposit. Because of that, I was able to go multiple times during the course of the event. What do you remember about HemisFair?
