Music you want to hear at the reunion
Posted Wednesday, April 22, 2009 05:03 PM

OK, here's your chance to help build the playlist for the reunion. Tell us what you'd like to hear. I'll bet my next paycheck--remember now, I'm self employed and things have been s-l-o-w--that Roger Barnes wants "Pretty Woman". As for the rest of you, let us know.

From Bren Sidereas:

Abbey Road side 2, the Paul side (this is a nice soft start up, besides
I think this LP came out in 1969)

Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys (McCartney liked this Brian Wilson song so much he imitated their sound with his own Back in the USSR)

California Dreamin' - The Mamas & Papas (who didn't like their
harmonies?)

China Grove - Doobies (singin' about a little ol' town down around San
Antone)

Summer in the City - Lovin' Spoonful (could be singing about any big
Texas city in August)

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress - Hollies (very sexy)

She's Not There - Zombies (too cool)

Stranger in My House - Ronnie Milsap (my favorite country singer, this
song rocks)

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Beatles (Eric Clapton guitar lead)

Ferry Across the Mersey - Gerry and the Pacemakers (for the slow
dancers)

Stand By Me - Ben E. King (classic)

Stand By Me - John Lennon (classic Lennon)

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac (Lindsey and Stevie break up - who never did that?)

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who (got to have a little "protest" flavor
somewhere)

Gimme Shelter - Stones (big finish for the big rock group that keeps on tickin')

I  found a site that lists the top rock songs from the 70s.  Since, after 40 years, you can't quite remember ... "what WAS that song?" this list is a big help.  Here's the link:

http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_songs70s.html

And, here's a link to the Billboard top songs of 69.

http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1969.htm

*****  5/5/09 - Here's another GREAT site to go to if you want to hear snippets (or full length) of songs that you can't quite remember what they sounded like.  A user-friendly, easy-to-get-around site.  Try it out.  It sure helped my memory (loss).

Here's a few from me:

**In a Gadda da Vida (Iron Butterfly) - pump up the volume

**Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (from Hair)

**Anything from early 70's Cream

**Early 13th Floor Elevators

**The Best of the Paragons (I'll let Roger pick the playlist from their discography)

From Bren Sidereas:

From Barb’s website links, I want to add Derek and the Dominos “Layla” to my list right after “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” to give Eric an encore.  Talking about awaiting message forum approval, what are the chances of adding “The Eyes of Texas” (UT 45  OU 35) to end the night with?  Doesn’t UT have some inside connections to this website?

What I'd really like to see is Guy Sealy's bravado (albeit whiskey-inspired) performance at our 25th Reunion at Sonterra. He commandeered the band we hired...fired their front man without authority....and gave it his best Merle Haggard for his besotted and amused classmates for the rest of the evening.  He left the stage and strutted off the premises to a rousing ovation with two good looking women (whom I did not recognize) on each arm.  It was the highlight of the evening. I am not making this stuff up....like Casey Stengel said....."you could look it up".

If we were to roll out "The Best of the Paragons" set list (actual) it would include:

Rusty Degges drum solo "Wipe Out"

Court Theilman crooning (1) the Beatles "Hide Your Love Away"  (2)"Kansas City" (3) The Yardbirds "For Your Love"

Tony Degges belting out (1) Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone"  (2) The Rolling Stones "Get Off My Cloud"  and of course his amped up version of  (3) "I Can't Get No Satisfaction"

And because I could remember the words and no one else gave a flip ...I got to sing:  (1)The  Yardbird's Mister You're a Better Man Than I  (2) The Kink's "Well Respected Man"  and prophetically....(3) Barry McGwire's "Eve of Destruction"

Unfortunately, this LP is no longer available and all known copies have been chewed up by my dogs....but I do endorse any of the above songs by the original artists at our party.

* It should be noted for posterity that Court Theilman was not only the "leader of the band" but that he possessed the only real musical talent therein.  He had an achingly sweet (yet masculine)  voice and sang with passion....and was, by far, the best guitarist in the band.  The rest of us couldn't carry his guitar case.

I'm voting for "Louie, Louie". I first heard that song in 7th grade (?) while listening to Terry Laughlin's garage band belting it out. (Terry was a neighbor three houses down on Chisholm Trail.) Despite all the knowing glances and smirks exchanged between the band members, I had no idea what the words actually were or were supposed to be.

I find it hard to believe that no one mentioned the only song I remember from MacArthur. Not the school song, not the fight song.    Anyone else remember  "YOU GIVE ME FEVER"??

The only other song that would have a meaning to me, would be "Gentle on My Mind".

Rog - Dude, I'm now transported back to 1966 or 1967 and with the band in either my parent's garage or in Degges' garage.  We're playing the hits.  Damn it's hot in here in July!  But, it sure is funnnnn.

Looks like we should have at least a double shot of Roy Orbison with "Only the Lonely" and "Pretty Woman", and rightfully so Roger.

Back in the summer of '64, I do vividly recall for weeks "Pretty Woman" blaring out from all the car radio speakers parked along the less than spectacular shores of Lake Casa Blanca, Laredo, TX.  It was the summer I first learned how to water ski along with the rest of my family.  We always  parked next to Augie, Tommy, and Tani Guajardo, young, fun friends of my parents.  We bought several Plymouths (including my '69 Barracuda) and Dodges from the Guajardo Chrysler car dealership well after my dad's transfer to San Antonio.  Yes, I was a Laredo AFB and Randolph AFB brat also.

I watched "For Love of the Game"--a baseball movie--and heard "Against the Wind" again, so I'm adding that to my list: " ... I'm older now but still running against the wind ...". I like the Bob Seger version from that movie.

I'd add some Tijuana Brass, a little Brazilian sound (The Look of Love, Boy from Ipanema), something from the Beach Boys and Blood, Sweat and Tears, and some Motown/soul music (Knock on Wood, My Girl, Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson).
