Teen Canteen Reunion

Took a break from elder care and dog wrangling, grabbed Debby Darlin' and dropped in on the Teen Canteen Reunion billed as "Samstock" at the Floores Country Store in Helotes TX.  Was disquietng to see so many old folks with canes, multi-colored hearing aids, grey hair, and big bellies...drifiting around in tie dye and such.  It looked like a hippie branch of Autumn Winds Nursing home had bused in residents for a senior activity.  Then I went into the grungy men's room, looked in the mirror, and was slapped back into reality....this is 2009 bub...not 1965...deal with it.  Was a trip to see the Teen Canteen Guru, Sam Kinsey, still above ground and quietly reveling in this concert given in his name. (My teen memories of Sam center around the haggling between Sam and Tony every time Courtney, Tony and I  entered the Canteen...something about smelling our breath).  Although I longed to see Bill Ash's "Stoics", Terry Laughlin's  "Invaders" or Jeff Schrieber's band stand and deliver, I had to be satisfied with a geriatric set by The Chayns....which was in fact pretty cool and had all the chicks gyrating and squealing once again.  The other bands I could not recall from yesteryear....too much water over the dam here.  Ran into Chester Slimp who will probably provide his own rememberance...but did not recognize another soul except my wife Debby and Bruce Hathaway (former KONO Jock).  All in all it was a tune-up for the Mac Reunion and yet another wake-up call on Father Time's relentless march.

Sorry I missed that thing !  I started going at 15 at Wonderland and danced a lot with Duf Plemmons and Doug Davis.  Only boys in the room who dared ask a NY smart ass with an attitude to boogie.  Anyone remember them?

Then it moved to San Pedro.  Ran away from home one time and ended up at the Canteen, but Mom & Dad sic'd the coppers on me who laid in wait by the front door.  Spied my Dad and took off down the hill, across San Pedro and disappeared.  Felt like a candidate for a much later roll in Charlie's Angels.

Would have loved to have seen all those geriatrics groovin' at the Canteen again.  Glad yoose guys had fun.
