Favorite Places to Go in SA

The Broadway Theater, Aztec Theater, Majestic Theater. The latter two were rare occurrences, since they were "downtown" and everybody knew that was "dangerous" after dark. North Star Mall's Cinema I and II were such novelties--TWO theaters under ONE roof! The San Pedro Drive-In, a/k/a The Passion Pit, was pretty risque. My dad always complained that I was paying way too much to go to one of the "off-base" theaters--why pay $2.50 per ticket when I could go to Ft. Sam Houston and see it for $1? The Frontier on Austin Highway--who doesn't have a story about that--the muscle cars made the metal roof reverberate. Eastwood Country Club--never went, but heard the stories. During Hemisfair, the Riverwalk was THE place to be at night. The Old San Francisco Steakhouse on San Pedro--a great place to take a date--when I could afford it. Swimming at the Alamo Heights pool. When we were in junior high, going to the Mac football game on Friday night at NE stadium and seeing the lines of car headlights going down Wetmore Rd. and then turning towards the stadium. Watching a Mac basketball game in the old boys' gym, before the Blossom Athletic Center was built.

Yes..the Teen Canteen with swishy Sam meeting you at the door.  Later on the Teen Canteen moved to Wonderland Shopping Center. I saw Bill Ash performing with his band The Stoics at the San Pedro Teen Canteen during the Battle of the Bands.  Also Terry Laughlin's band, The Invaders, which featured Terry on lead guitar, John Mullins on bass guitar, Roger Kies on rhythm guitar, and Rick Tate on drums. The Invaders were good but The Stoics were good enough to cut records...and they did....one of their singles "Enough of What I Need" was written by Bill.  Every time I saw the Battle of the Bands a local band named The Chains won the competition.  The chicks just went crazy over those boys.

Re "The Crystal Pistol"....I don't recall that club...but I did visit the pre-Hemis Fair River Walk Club, "Poco Loco" with Lynn Moody...whose Dad....as I recall owned the place.  Was pretty cool going with Lynn and getting everything free.  Those were the days when you took your life in your hands cruising the River Walk at night.....not to mention the downtown streets.  Another memorable  night was  when we were about 14  when we drove downtown in Tony Degges' "Blue Goose" Plymouth Station wagon and went to the Green Gate Strip Club ... with Rusty Degges and Court Theilman in the posse.  We brassed our way into the club pretending to be 18.....but didn't push it and ordered only soft drinks so as to be left alone to admire the considerable charms of the ladies on  stage.  We did all that and slipped back into our suburban homes before our parents even knew we left Lantana.

Ken,

You took dates to The San Francisco Steak House!!?? WOW! I only went there a few times--WITH MY PARENTS! We took my Mom and Dad there for their 25th Anniversary--that was shortly before my Mom died. It does hold great memories for me--I also had my first drink there--age 21--a slow gin fizz--I think it was cherry. I know---no one will believe that. I was probably the only one in our class that did not drink.

I took only one date--Toni Cusick--there a couple of times and that was after I had gone with her and her parents and saw how much she enjoyed it. Ah, what we do for love And how many yards I had to mow to afford it!

Okay - I'll use Favorite Places - but this may just be Lots of Places (and limited to SA)...

DOWNTOWN - We had a family business on Broadway - so I was never in fear of downtown.  The "men" would all go to lunch in the basement club at the Granada Hotel on Saturdays and the boys had free-reign of downtown.  I saw Hard Days Nite and Help! at the Majestic and bought Leslie Gore's record at the Joske's basement.  Anyway - downtown during Hemisfair (I was a custodian) had Love Street, the Whiskey and the Pussi Kat. I played in bands and got into most of these haunts even at that age - I guess it was charm.

AUSTIN HWY / ALAMO HTS - the Dump, the Mind's Eye - I think my recall is correct that this was the same location in different morphs.  I think it had a third name later still - but our band played many times at the Mind's Eye version.  Anyway - it was right there across from Terrell Plaza - next to the feild that had been The Big Orange (nobody ever seems to rememberthe Big O) - The Mule Stall (1 and 2)

MOVIES - Alamo Drive-in - Olmos Theatre - Laurel Theater - Frederickburg Rd Drive-in - Broadway Theater - the Woodlawn

LOLLING - Astro Bowl - Sunken Gardens - Teen Scene (at NW Center) - La Villita - Alamo Hts Pool - Brackenridge Park - Robber's Cave - Seven Oaks - Ira Lee Rd / Salado Ck - Grandma's Tea House - Rollercade - Cool Crest - Playland / Kiddie Park - Sunset Ridge - Central Park Mall Sign - Hall Of Horns - McNay - Witte - Scrivner's - Gulf Mart - Gibson's Costumes

EATS - Tee Pee - Barn Door - Wolff's Inn - Brittany Buffet - La Fonda - Alphie's - Lamm's - El Rancho - La Fuente - Ize Box - Buddy's Drive-in -  Earl Abel's - Shakey's Pizza - Pig Stand(s) - Bun N Barrel Terrace - Bean Pot - Christie's - Naples - Zider Zee - Night Hawk - Tip Top

MUSIC - Silvey Music - Caldwell Music - Music Mart at Alena Village - Record Town - Municipal Auditorium - Southern Music

CROSSOVERS - Eastwoods - S New Braunfels clubs (now, that could get scary) - Texas Theater - Danny's in Universal City - Westside clubs - The Junction - The Blue Note

CAR RACING - the Cloverleaf at San Pedro / 410 - Alamo Dragway (Sunday!! Be There!!) - 1/4 mile Stock Car track off Austin Highway - 1/2 mile Stock Car track off Topperwine Rd  - Little Green Valley - Harry Wurzbach near Garner
